Prevalence of Dementia and Alzheimers Disease in Elders

Introduction: Background to the topic Dementia Dementia is one of the most common diseases that affects the elderly and requires substantial healthcare structures to be placed thereof. Another disease that is commonly found amongst the elderly is Ð lzhÐ µimÐ µrs disease. Both these are found to be significantly common amongst the aged people in the world. The treatment and medication of this disease is Ð ° costly affair and can keep on increasing if the disease continues to grow (Alvarado-Esquivel et al, 2004). It is important to note though that the number of people becoming victim to this disease vary based on Ð ° number of factors. According to Ð ° recent research conducted for the spread of dementia in the United States recorded a total of 10% of the elderly in the population (i.e. those aged 65 or above) to be experiencing symptoms of or severe cases of dementia. The overall percentage for Ð lzhÐ µimÐ µr disease was recorded to be in the roundabouts of the two-third percentage of the total cases available for the elderly as well. On the other hand, the statistics of the older people suffering from this illness in China are recorded to be as high as nearly 3.49% for those suffering from dementia and 1.85% for those suffering from Ð D.
